Ellan H. Rhodes

On September 1, 2015, Ellan Rhodes passed from this Earth and into the arms of Jesus.  Her long battle with illness ended, and her rest was finally won.  She died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family.

Ellan was born in 1939 in Gaffney, SC, and later settled in Columbia where she met and married her sweetheart Homer.  They were blessed with three children and raised them in a very loving home.  Ellan was a stay at home mom, as were most of her generation, and she taught her kids how to read before they entered school.  She was a wonderful storyteller and music lover, and her children learned much from her.  As the children grew older, Ellan’s home became a magnet for other kids.  The yard was often full of cars as she made everyone feel welcome.  

Ellan was a talented artist with a special gift for handmade crafts and clothing.  Whether it was crocheted, knitted, or sewn, she made beautiful pieces which she gladly gave away.  She constantly surprised her family with new things she made, and she was always in search of new skills or techniques. Her creativity extended to the kitchen, where she was “the best cook ever”, according to her husband.

Ellan’s church family was very important to her.  She generously contributed her time, energy, and talents to her church and was a willing volunteer when one was needed.  She made many friends there, where she will be greatly missed.  

Ellan leaves behind her devoted husband of over 59 years, Homer; three children, Nate (Charlene), Jayne (Doug), and Tambri (Mike); and many grandchildren and great grandchildren; as well as her extended family and friends.  She was loved very much by her family and friends, who will miss her.

A visitation with the family will begin at Noon, followed by a memorial service at 2:00PM on Friday, September 4, 2015, at Temple Baptist Church, 806 Universal Drive, Columbia, SC 29209.  Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church.
