Born at Fort Jackson Hospital on October 24, 1969, with his twin brother William Scott, “Rusty” (as he was known to family and friends) grew up in Loris, SC where he played golf and football at Loris High School before graduating in 1987. After two years at Spartanburg Methodist College, Russell enlisted in the US Army, where he served with the 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division stationed in Vicenza, Italy. He was later deployed to Iraq during the first Gulf War as a stinger missile operator and to protect Kurdish refugees as part of “Operation Provide Comfort.” After returning stateside, Russell’s love of fishing and boating took him all over the country including lobster boats in Maine, Alaskan Pollock expeditions in the Bering Sea, and big-game fishing in the Florida Keys. Eventually settling back in the South Carolina, Russell followed in both his grandfathers’ footsteps in the automotive industry working for auto dealerships in the Midlands. Over the last decade Russell worked for the family’s real estate development company and the United Way.
