Waldorf Korb Obituary

Korb, Waldorf Traverse (1925-2018)

Waldorf Traverse Korb passed away peacefully in his sleep April 19, 2018 in Columbia, South Carolina. Born on September 27, 1925 in Golden City, Missouri to John and Alma (Waters) Korb, Wally’s life was filled with service and caring. While stationed at MacDill AFB in Tampa, Florida, Wally met his wonderful wife Marjory, who lived in Sarasota. Married on May 16, 1949, Wally and Marge lived a treasured life together for almost 67 years and most recently were honored as February “Couple of the Month” at Palmettos of Parklane.

After a brief stint as teacher and band director at Punta Gorda High School, Wally traded coasts and headed east to Ft. Lauderdale, where he had an outstanding teaching career in Social Studies at Stranahan High School. Additionally, Lieutenant Colonel Korb continued as an active reservist in the Air Force at Homestead AFB. Finally, Wally free-lanced as a sports car writer for Sports Car Graphic, covering major races at Daytona and Sebring as well as a slew of regional races. Along the way, “Pooie” also restored several MGs, including his beloved MGB-GT, all the time listening to his extensive jazz collection. He had great affection for children and animals, especially his wonderful Molly.

In his retirement years, Marge and Wally “globe-trotted” to Norris Lake, Georgia; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Sarasota, Florida, Corrales, New Mexico; Cumming, Georgia, and, finally, Columbia, South Carolina. Wally was preceded in death by his son, Michael Korb, and brother, Connell Korb, as well as brother-in-law Philip Bacon.

Wally is survived by his remarkable wife, Marjory (Bacon), his son Willis (Kathleen) Korb, daughters Patricia Mason and Lisa Wyatt, grandchildren Hollis Korb, Holly Korb Rabnott, Kelly Korb, Heather Swindle, and Kaiya Korb, great grand-children Jasper Mayone and Stella Mayone, niece Mitzi Korb and nephew John Korb. Funeral arrangements, including cremation, are being facilitated by Kornegay and Moseley of Columbia. A tribute to Wally at Fort Jackson National Cemetery will be arranged at a later date.
