Virginia Belanger

Virginia M. Belanger, 88, passed away peacefully the morning of February 4, 2022 in Columbia, SC.  Born in Boston, MA on April 10, 1933, Virginia graduated from Jamaica Plain High School, Simmons College and received her Masters in Education from Boston University.  In 1955, she married Donald J. Belanger, who predeceased her in 2014.  Virginia taught elementary school in Brookline, MA and was proud of her work developing the Boston Community Schools program in the 1970’s, which expanded the use of school buildings to provide after-school and community services.  A longtime resident of Jamaica Plain, Virginia was a member and served on the board of the Tuesday Club at the Loring-Greenough House for many years. Virginia loved music and all types of dance, from the modern dance classes she took in school to the Chinese dance classes she took in her 80s. She and Donald were sometimes asked if they were professional dancers.

She is survived by her children, Richard C. Belanger (Emily) of Ann Arbor, MI, and Annemarie B. Mathews (Roderick “Matt”) of Columbia, SC.  She also leaves the grandchildren she loved and of whom she was so proud: Elizabeth R. Belanger of Los Angeles, CA, Alexander C. Belanger of Ann Arbor, MI, Roy B. Mathews of Washington, DC, and Benjamin J. Mathews of Columbia, SC.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Comfort Care Hospice and Brookdale of Columbia, SC for their care of Virginia during her final years.  The memorial service and internment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Virginia’s memory to the Loring-Greenough House or The Alzheimer’s Association.
