Lula Murray Camp

Lula Murray Camp passed away after a battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on June 7, 2021. Born Lula Grace Murray on December 21, 1943 in Columbia, SC as the second child of four and first daughter of Clement and Clementine Murray, Lula grew up on Glenwood Rd in Columbia and graduated from University High School. She studied French at the University of South Carolina, ultimately obtaining a masters degree.  Lula went on to briefly work for the South Carolina Department of Social Services before following her dream of teaching French. She started teaching at Dentsville High School in 1969 before transitioning to the newly built Spring Valley High School in northeast Columbia.  Lula taught at Spring Valley for 34 years and retired in 2003, leaving behind a legacy of thousands of students in whom she inspired a love of learning, the French language, and French culture.  In her retirement, Lula taught line dancing classes at Shepherd's Center in St. Andrews, and loved on her dear cats, her flowers, and more recently, her grandchildren.  Lula was a 40+ year member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where she actively served on committees, led teams of ushers, and ministered to shut-ins and the sick.  
Surviving are her son Chavous Camp (Andrea), of Columbia, SC, her two grandchildren, Helen and CJ, whom she adored, her brother, Warren Murray (Wanda), of Titusville, FL, and her nephews, William (Jennifer) and Edward Murray.  She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, James Murray, and her sister, Kathleen Murray. Funeral services and interment of Lula’s ashes will be Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Forest Dr. In Columbia, SC on Saturday, June 19th, 2021 at 4:00pm.  A Celebration of Life and visitation will immediately precede the funeral at 2:00pm in the church’s Fellowship Activities Building.  All who knew Lula are welcome and asked to bring a memory or story of her with them to the celebration.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in her memory.
