Deacon Levi Martin was born on April 18, 1932 to the late Isom Wesley Martin and Pearl Jamison of Elgin, SC. He was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 14, 2020.
Levi was educated in the public schools of Kershaw County. Hemoved to Chicago, IL with his family in 1960 where he workedand retired from Gutmann Leather Co., Inc after 22 years of service. He moved back to Columbia, SC in the early 80’s returning to work as a truck driver for Galaxy Boat Co. Levi later started a lawn care business where he worked until he became ill. He had a love for fishing and baseball. He often spoke about his years as a pitcher for the county baseball team. A few of his past times were gardening and watching television. When he wasn’t planting a garden, Levi would be sitting in his favorite chair enjoying Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Wrestling or laughing aloud as he watched Sanford & Son.
Levi was united in holy matrimony to the late Thelma Martin on December 17, 1955. This union of love was blessed with more than 50 years of love, devotion, happiness, laughter and the birth of one son, Lorenzo.
Levi accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age. He was a faithful and dedicated member of the Rehoboth Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. During his tenure he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Jubilee Choir.
Deacon Martin was truly a loving and God-fearing man. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents the late Isom W. Martin and Pearl Jamison, his wife Thelma Martin, 7brothers Ezell, Matthew, Roosevelt, Albert, John Wesley, Clarence, and David, 3 sisters Gertrude, Eva Mae and Mary; and his grandson, Sean Martin.
Those left to cherish his fond memories, grieve his passing and celebrate his homegoing are: one loving son, Lorenzo (Rene) Martin of Conyers, GA. 2 devoted sisters, Mrs. Martha(Roosevelt) Branch and Mrs. Katherine Glover of Columbia, SC; two loving granddaughters, Chanel (Bryant) Hall and Shannon (Willie) Barnes, 5 great-grandchildren, Kayla McMichael, Braxton Hall, Phoenix Barnes, Cameron Barnes and Avery Barnes; a host of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and dear friends, all who rejoice that he is resting with the Lord.
