Landon Owen Shelton (Jim) left his earthly body to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on June 1, 2022. He was born December 3, 1927, as the youngest son of James and Isma Shelton of Chatham, Virginia.
After completing high school in Chatham, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served from 1945 - 1947. Upon completing his military obligation, he enrolled at Furman University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and a Master's degree in Education Administration. While playing baseball for Furman University, he received contract offers from several major league teams including the L.A. Dodgers but none were finalized. Overall, he played in over 2,000 baseball games in his lifetime. His career took him to Maryland where he became a high school principal for 25 years. Later, he moved to South Carolina and taught physical education at the high school level. During his teaching career, Jim earned a name for himself as a coach in baseball, football, and basketball. He remained an avid sports fan throughout his life and was a dedicated supporter of the L.A. Dodgers baseball team, the Duke Blue Devils basketball team, and the South Carolina Gamecock football team. In his spare time, he enjoyed tennis and golf where he boasted of ten holes in one. Jim married his beloved wife Bobbie in 1987 and relocated to Columbia, SC shortly thereafter. He and Bobbie were faithful members of Spring Valley Baptist Church in Columbia where he served as a deacon for 12 years.
He is survived by Bobbie, his loving wife of 35 years; sons, Mickey and Scott and daughter Sabrina Shelton Mier along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his parents, brother Lawrence, sister Louise, and daughters Linda and Penny.
A memorial service will take place at Spring Valley Baptist Church, 91 Polo Rd., Columbia SC on Monday June 6, 2022 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spring Valley Baptist Church. The family gives their sincerest thanks to the BYKOTA Life Group of Spring Valley Baptist Church for their prayers and support for the past several years.
