Herbert Saul Badal, born in Chicago, Illinois on August 9, 1934 passed away in Blythewood, SC on October 3, 2021. Herb was the eldest son of Joseph and Susan Badal. In 1960 he married Carol McElhany, who preceded him in death. He is survived by their three children: Matthew, Ann and Kathryn; and three grandchildren Saul, Lance and Lyndsey; and one brother Robert (Donna) Badal of Hayward, Wisconsin. Mr. Badal was preceded in death by his sister, Charlotte Wynegar.
Herb was a graduate of Armstrong school and Sullivan High School in Chicago where he earned All-State honors in football. He went on to attend the University of Illinois where he joined the Delta Chi Fraternity and played end for the University of Illinois football team from 1952-1956, including a trip to the Rose Bowl as a freshman. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army and trained as an artillery officer before being stationed in South Korea. While there, his football talents led to playing and serving as a head coach in the I Corps football league until the end of his tour. He returned to the States and began his career in manufacturing as a plant manager beginning in Chicago with Field Container and later with Package Products/Sonoco in Charlotte, and Diamond Packaging inRochester, NY.
Herb and Carol spent many years in Charlotte where they were first active at Incarnation Lutheran and later in life at Living Savior Lutheran. Herb became a competitive senior tennis player, and he enjoyed golf throughout his life. He was a friend of God and was loved by many because of his personal warmth, good humor and loyalty to friends and family.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30pm on Sunday, November 7 at Kornegay and Moseley, 4645 Hardscrabble Rd. Columbia, SC 29229. Family visitation from 3:00-4:30pm. There will be a live stream of the memorial service at www.kornegayandmoseley.com.
He will be interred at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
