Rex Elvis Moore

February 9, 1936 ~ September 14, 2017 (age 81) 81 Years Old


On Thursday, September 14, 2017 Rex Elvis Moore 81, passed from this life into his heavenly home. Rex was the second of three children born to James Elvis and Mary Lou Harris Moore on February 9, 1936. He had two siblings, Donald Ray Moore, deceased (Myrtle), and Betty Moore Whitfield of Columbia, SC. Rex graduated from Bessemer High School in 1954, and in 1955 married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Hodges Moore, deceased. They were married for 56 years and had two children James Robert “Bobby” Moore (Shannon), and Debra S. “Debbie” Moore of Columbia, SC. Rex is survived by his children, Bobby (Shannon) and Debbie, as well as grandsons Dru May, and Ryan May, and great grandsons Dru May, Jr. and Brantley May. He is predeceased by grandson, Christopher Brian Moore. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him dearly. Rex was a wonderful provider for his family, having worked for the U. S. Treasury Department for 37 years, and also took classes at Samford University in Birmingham, AL. He was a faithful servant of Christ at North Highlands Baptist Church in Hueytown, AL, where he served as deacon, Bible study teacher, and surrendered his life to God's call into the ministry. He pastored many smaller congregations and was always ready if called upon to fill in for another local pastor. Rex loved missions and participated in many opportunities to further the gospel of Christ. He always made time to attend school and sports activities of his children and grandchildren. He visited hospitals, nursing homes, and those who were homebound.. He was a past Master of the Hueytown Masonic Lodge, and served 1 year as chaplain for the Grand Lodge of Alabama. After moving to Columbia, SC in 2012, Rex again found himself ministering in weekly devotionals for the residents of Pruitt Health-Blythewood skilled nursing facility, where he resided the last months of his life. In his high school year book Rex wrote “ I want to so live my life that when I die, even the undertaker will be sorry”. Well done thy good and faithful servant. You reached your earthly goal, and now are experiencing your heavenly prize! You were truly a friend to many. The family welcomes friends and loved ones to an informal viewing at Kornegay-Moseley Funeral Home in Columbia, SC on Saturday, September 16th, from 11AM-1 PM. Rex will then travel home to Alabama, where a visitation will be held at North Highlands Baptist Church on Monday, September 18th from 6-8 PM. The funeral will be held at the church Tuesday, September 19th at 11 AM, with interment following at Valhalla Cemetery with Peoples Chapel directing. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Youth Ministry or General Fund of North Highlands Baptist Church in Hueytown, AL. The family expresses special thanks to the nursing staff and therapy department of Pruitt Health Blythewood, and Pruitt Health Hospice for their love and care for Rex in his last days, as well as his home caregiver, Becky Phillips.
