Dr. Ann Loraine Lyness, 86, of Columbia SC, passed away on Friday November 1, 2019.

Ann, affectionately known as “Aunt Ann”, was born March 4, 1933 in Pittsburgh PA to Henrietta and Fred Bowden. Ann was a registered nurse and received her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, where she taught and was a student advisor for the School of Nursing. After she retired from PITT, she relocated to Columbia, SC and became a faculty member for the University Of South Carolina College Of Nursing. Ann published several academic papers in the field of nursing, co-authored a book on nursing concepts and theories, and served as an associate editor for the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics.

Ann was also a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She had a passion for painting and was able to see beauty in all things as she captured them on canvas. Her artistic works include murals for the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Nursing and the University Of South Carolina College Of Nursing, along with many paintings of her family, her pets, and inspiringly beautiful scenes of nature. Ann combined her beautiful artwork with technology to create greeting cards and she always put a smile on everyone’s face as she generously gave out her hand made greeting cards where ever she went.

In retirement Ann volunteered as a docent for the Columbia Museum of Art, and volunteered at the city of Columbia’s Women’s Shelter. Ann was a member of the Spring Valley Presbyterian Church.

Ann was preceded in death by her son, Jonathan. Ann is survived by her sister Henrietta Nass (David), her nieces Beth Benjamin (Mike) and Ester Antonelli (Frank), her nephews Daniel Nass (Elizabeth) and Dean Nass, and many loving great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Spring Valley Presbyterian Church on January 4, 2020 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Columbia, where Ann’s painting of their original building is hanging in the entrance way, or to the Columbia Women’s Shelter, where Ann’s original paintings for several of the shelter’s Mother’s Day Card fundraisers are hanging in the dining room along with a large landscape mural displayed in one of their meeting rooms.
