A service to celebrate the life of William A. "Bill" Putman, 86, of Lexington will be held
at 1:00 pm Thursday, May 19, 2016, in the chapel of Kornegay & Moseley Funeral
Home, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Sam McGregor, Jr.
Burial will follow the service at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Lexington County Recreation and
Aging Commission or to Palmetto Health Hospice.
Mr. Putman passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016, at his home surrounded by his loving
family.
He was born in Rome, Georgia, and was the son of the late Arnold and Alice Putman. Mr.
Putman was formerly a member and elder of Trinity Presbyterian Church. As a child, he
loved playing sports and was an Eagle Scout with honors and a Boy Scout camp
counselor. He served as a member of the US Army Air Corp as a radar mechanic for a B-
29 bomber, serving in numerous bases in the United States and with the occupation forces
in Japan after World War II. In 1949 he was discharged from the Air Force, subsequently
attending Furman University for two years. He spent many years as an engineer and later
served as a drug and alcohol counselor after receiving his BA degree in counseling from
Goddard College.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Mr. Putman is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Lou Rutledge Putman, and six
children: daughters Elizabeth Jones and husband Russ, Marilu McGregor and husband
Jimmy, Lynn Hudson and husband Billy, Sally Sherrin and husband Dale, and sons Billy
Putman and wife Rebecca, and Alan Putman and wife Janice. Also surviving are brother
Allen (Bud) Putman and wife Mary Ruth, and sister Mary Helen Strouse and husband
Garry. Mr. Putman is survived by his loving grandchildren: Rusty Jones and wife
Monica, Christopher Jones and wife Donna, John McGregor and wife Sarah, Thama
McGregor Matthews and husband Brian, Lou Hudson, Sandi Hudson Hall and husband
Harvin, Renee Sherrin Rainey and husband Willis, Hampton Sherrin, William (Trey)
Arnold Putman III and wife Courtney, Daniel Putman, Allison Roberts, Zachary Alan
Hance, and Anna Grace Putman. Great-grandchildren include Elena, Caleb, Leah,
Jaimee, and Ansley
