Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Peter L. Speronis of Columbia, SC passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 16th, 2016 at the age of 92. 

He was born in 1924 in Lowell, Massachusetts to Louis and Katherine Speronis. He grew up in Lowell and volunteered for military service during WWII.  At the age of twenty he was stationed in Orangeburg and North, SC where he began flight school training.   He flew with 848th Bomb Squadron/   490th Bomber group/ 3rd Air Division / 8th Air Force in Eye and Diss England.  He piloted B-17 bombers, and flew 23 missions over Germany, before returning to the states for further training.  He received the AME ribbon with 3 bronze stars, the Air medal with three oak leaf clusters and 1- O/S Bar American Theatre World War II victory medal.

After the war he returned to Boston Massachusetts where he graduated from Boston University with a Juris Doctorate, 1951.

He continued in the Army Air Corps from 1945- 1972 first as a pilot then as JAG, attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel.

After graduation he returned to Lowell Massachusetts where he had a private law practice, practicing for over thirty years. Eleven of those years Speronis also served as Lowell, Massachusetts City Solicitor.

Upon retirement (1981) he moved to Florida and eventually settled in Tampa, Florida and became the Zoning Hearing Master for Hillsborough County.

He followed his son Jamie and family from Gainesville, Fla., to Washington DC, and Columbia, SC settling into SC in 2005. 

Mr. Speronis was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Columbia, SC.  He enjoyed playing tennis and golf, and continued to play golf into his 80’s.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lois and Katherine Speronis., brothers Stephen and Xenophon (Zenny) and sisters Stavrothea (Thea) and Aristea (Aris).  He is survived by two sisters: Alyce Speronis and Helen Speronis of Lowell, Massachusetts, his two Sons: Lee Speronis (Cathy) of Bangor ME and Jamie Speronis (Kristy) of Blythewood, SC.  He is also survived by four grandchildren: Stephen, Elena, Conner and Bryson.

Burial with Full Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
