To Stephanie and all the family our most sincere condolences.  No mere words can assuage the grief and the loss of so gracious and kind a man.  How sad to search for an old Army friend only to find his obituary. How well I remember how Paul took a fresh out of school counterintelligence agent and led and guided him.  All my success I owe to Paul because of his mentoring.  Not only was he a mentor but also a friend.  Paul, oh how I wish we could return to those days in Bad Hersfeld.  The world is less of a place with his loss.  Stephanie, I hope and pray that the Lord has allowed His peace to rest upon you and all your family.  God Bless you all.

Thank you Marvin for your kind words. I am just reading this now all these years later. Where are you now? I think of you often and your kindness to us when we lived in Sierra Vista.

Paul and I exchanged many emails during his battle with Prostate Cancer.  And "battle" he did with his own personal research and study of this insidous disease of men.  I know Paul would want all men reading these condolences to be aware of this men''s disease and be sure to get no longer than "annual" PSA blood serum tests and digital rectal exams (DRE) to nip any early development in the bud.  I know Paul is now at rest with our Lord and you can bet he will still be present in the minds and hearts of his wife, family, and close friends.  Peace is now with you, Paul.

Paul certainly was a special person and well loved by many.  Although we hadn't known him and Stephanie very long, only about 4 years, their lives were a testimony of God's grace working through them.  He will be missed dearly by many and our prayers go out to his sweet wife, Stephanie, and their family.

Paul and his wife, Stephanie, were and are dear friends of my mother, Glenda (Lewis Dempsey Kochel), CHS Class of 1969. I remember him, his wife, Stephanie, and their children, Jennifer and Paul. It''s sad when good people pass on before their time but Paul left a legacy of being a good man and one his family can be proud of. Stephanie, Jennifer and Paul - know that you are not alone now or ever and we share your sadness. Love, Stephanie

December 19, 2011 4:06 PM

Stephanie, my heart goes out to you and your family.  Paul was a true friend, and his loss leaves an unfathomable gap in the lives of all he touched.  Although I knew him for only a quarter of a century, he was one of those rare people whom you feel you’ve been friends for life.

As Pat and Judy so aptly put it, Paul was kind, gentle, non-judgmental, and accepting of others.  He never uttered a harsh word.  He could talk easily with anybody on any topic, which is one of the many characteristics which made him so good at what he did.  He dedicated his life to defending the freedoms he loved so dearly, and went out the way he lived: fighting valiantly, hoping ever, never accepting defeat.  He lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Utterly futile words of condolence now, I know, but with time may you adopt:  Don’t be sad it’s over.  Be happy it was.

Love and peace,

Gordon Barland

When I first arrived at Fort Meade, MD Polygraph Quality Control, Paul was my first line supervisor.  His love for his work and professionalism was without a doubt to be admired.  Learning this and more was something I freely given to me by Paul.  This remained inside with me until I retired and continues to this day. I know all who served with Paul have a special place in their hearts for a man who stood side by side with all of us.
