Ms. Patricia “Pat” Geiger Massie, affectionately known to her family and friends as “Sister,” was born on April 26, 1951, in Columbia, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Caleb Jackson and Mae Evelyn Geiger Metz. She departed this life on March 10, 2015.

Patricia was reared in Columbia, and she was educated in the Richland County public schools. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1969. She graduated from Benedict College, Columbia, South Carolina, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work, in 1974. In 1990, she pursued a Master of Science degree in Social Work at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. She retired from AT&T Communications as a long distance operator after 20 years of service.

At an early age, Patricia accepted Christ as her personal savior. She was baptized at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church, where she was an active member of the church choir, Deaconess Board, Pulpit Aide, Missionary Society, and several other ministries. She had a passion for working with the youth of the church. She taught Sunday School for several years, and she organized the Ambassadors for Christ Youth Choir. She later joined the New Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served on the Deaconess Board until her health declined. 

Patricia dedicated her life to public service. She was a Diamond Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and a former member of the Altruist Federated Women’s Club. She had a passion for helping others, and she instilled in her daughters the importance of community service. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, and entertaining family and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her father, maternal grandmother, Hattie Lucille LaBorde, and nephew, Cecil N. Geiger, II. 

Patricia leaves the following to cherish her precious memories: her mother, Mae Evelyn Geiger Metz, of Columbia, SC; two daughters, Andrea (Tony Sr.) Vaughn and Dr. Tajuana D. Massie, both of Columbia, SC; three grandsons, Tony Jr., Terrell, and Antonio Vaughn, all of Columbia, SC; seven brothers, Cecil (Bessie) Geiger Sr., Willie (Juanita) Geiger, Myron Geiger, William (Feletha) Metz, Matthew (Machelle) McCants, all of Columbia, SC, Gary Geiger of Charlotte, NC; and Phillip Jackson of Boston, MA; two sisters, Lucinda Jackson and Lena Jackson, both of Newark, New Jersey; one aunt, Josephine Allen, of Columbia; seven nieces; eight nephews; one great niece; and two great nephews. She also leaves a special friend, Barbara Toatley, and a host of family members and friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.

The family will receive guests on Friday, March 13, 2015, from 6-8 pm at Kornegay & Moseley Funeral Home, 4645 Hard Scrabble Road, Columbia. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, March, 14, 2015, at New Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1236 Gregg Street, Columbia, SC.  Burial will follow the service at Palmetto Cemetery located on Fairfield Road.
