Margaret Maggie (Couch) Steele

August 20, 1927 ~ January 8, 2016 (age 88) 88 Years Old


Margaret  A. “Maggie” Steele 88, died on January 8 in Columbia SC. 

Born August 20, 1927 in Rock Island Ill., daughter of Charles E and Ada Fay Davis Couch. She  married William Steele on September 27, 1951, they were married 63 years. They lived in Davenport until 1967 and moved to Burlington Iowa. She is a graduate of Rock Island High school, degree from Augustana College in English Literature and European History where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa, a member of  Sigma Kappa Tau and a member of Augustana Orchestra and Band. She received her master’s degree in English Literature from Claremont graduate school in California in 1951. She has 2 Children, William Jr (Joni) in Kansas City Missouri and Sally, (Bill) with 2 grandchildren Jonathan and Margaret in Columbia Sc.

In 2007 the Steele's decided to leave Burlington and move to Columbia, South Carolina to be near to their daughter and son-in-law and grandchildren.  

Maggie was active on the local, state andregional levels and served on the board of directors of the Iowa Affiliate of the American Heart Association. Active and board member of Southeast Iowa Symphony, Fine Arts League, Iowa Study Club, The What So Ever Kings Daughters Circle and Burlington Golf Club.

Member of the First United Methodist Church, were she and her husband taught Sunday School and served as youth counselors. 

Maggie had a wonderful life with family and friends were of greatest importance.  She enjoyed a life where she was active in Tennis, Boating, fishing, doting on the grandchildren, cheering on the Chicago Cubs and extensive domestic and international travel. 

She is preceded in death by her husband William, her parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. She is survived by her son William Jr., daughter Sally, grandchildren Jonathan and Margaret, several nieces and nephews. 

Per her wishes, cremation and a private graveside service will be held. A memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra.
