Luz M. Rodriguez-Hernandez

Luz M. Rodriguez – Hernandez of Columbia, SC  passed away Monday, June 20, 2016 at the age of 81.  Born March 7, 1935 in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Luz was the daughter of the late Carlos and Marcolina Ramirez. 

Luz is survived by her husband of 59 years Jose Rodriguez – Hernandez, an army veteran.  After leaving Puerto Rico, Luz and Jose lived in various states and in Japan and Panama.  Luz and Jose had two children: the late Jose Rodriguez, Jr. and Luz Maria Medina. Luz is also survived by two granddaughters: Lisa M. Williams (Chris) and Mary C. Medina (daughters of Luz Medina) and two great grandchildren: Logan A. Williams and A. Reese Williams.

After attending the University of Puerto Rico, Luz taught grade school before she and Jose started traveling for Jose’s military career. Luz was an avid animal lover, adopting many dogs or cats throughout her life.  In addition, she would feed and fondly give a nickname to any stray cat that came to her door.  Luz loved sports and politics and enjoyed any opportunity to watch a game or debate.  She was also known for getting into heated debates over the latest political topic.  She especially loved presidential elections.  Late in life, Luz taught herself how to actively use a computer and spent many late nights tracing her family’s ancestry back to the 1700s. Luz loved connecting with family and never missed an opportunity to celebrate a birthday or accomplishment of a loved one.

Luz was predeceased by her only sister Rosa Ramirez and is survived by her brothers: Mario Ramirez, Carlos Ramirez, Jesus Ramirez and Mariano Ramirez. 

A memorial service will not be held.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).   www.aspca.org/donate
