Elaine Yvonne Kotchmar

February 17, 1946 ~ December 5, 2017 (age 71) 71 Years Old


A service to celebrate the life of Elaine Yvonne Fersner Kotchmar, 71, of Columbia, will be held at 12:00 pm, Saturday, December 9, 2017 in the chapel of Kornegay & Moseley (4645 Hard Scrabble Road, Columbia) with Dr. John C. Thweatt officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. A private burial will occur later in the week at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery.

Mrs. Kotchmar passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. She grew up in Orangeburg, South Carolina and was the daughter of the late Malcolm Reeves Fersner and Christine Ackerman Fersner.

Mrs. Kotchmar is survived by her husband, George S. Kotchmar Jr., M.D., Colonel, USAF, retired. She is also survived by her three children: Kimberly Elaine (John) Thweatt, Tracy Lynn (Shane) McKay, and David Stephen Kotchmar; her seven grandchildren: Hannah Thweatt, Morgan McKay, Hope Thweatt, Tyler McKay, Hollie Thweatt, Kimberly Joy Thweatt, and Allison McKay; and many precious nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mrs. Kotchmar is survived by her brother Malcolm Russell Fersner (Mary Sue) and was preceded in death by her sister Christine Dayle Fersner.

She is a 1967 graduate of Medical College of South Carolina School of Nursing and her nursing career wasin the field of Obstetrics-Gynecology/Geriatrics. Her service also included selection to the Junior Auxiliary in Biloxi-Ocean Springs, MS, 1986-1992. 

“Laine” was a loving and devoted wife to George of fifty years of marriage. Being a wife, mother, and grandmother were absolutely her favorite roles in life. She gave of herself selflessly, lovingly modeling service to the Lord. She was a prayer warrior for her family and community, just one of the many daily reasons she will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, Elaine’s desire would be to consider a donation to the “Lottie Moon Offering” (which supports foreign missions) sent to First Baptist Church of Pell City, 2309 2nd Avenue, N., Pell City, AL 35125.
