LTC (Ret.) Frederick John Schnell, DDS, 78, of Columbia passed away Friday, February 24, 2017. The son of the late Phillip and Adelaide Schnell, he was born in High Point, NC on July 14, 1938. He graduated from Aberdeen High School, UNC and UNC School of Dentistry before beginning his career in the US Army. He was an exemplary member of the Armed Forces with an unparalleled work ethic. After retiring from the US Army, he continued pursuing his passion and career in dentistry to the very end. He was never one to sit idly, preferring instead to spend his down time outdoors swimming, biking, and tinkering in his garage. He was a devout follower of Jesus Christ and never met a stranger. He will be remembered for seeing the good and value in anyone and anything.
Dr. Schnell was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He is survived by his loving wife Lee Schnell; children, Lt Col (Ret.) Danny Schnell and wife Amy, Dr. Fred Schnell, Dr. James Schnell and wife Sheryl, and Dr. Susan Fulkerson and husband Scott; grandchildren, Danny, Brianne, Matthew and Camille Schnell, Steven and Alex Schnell, Caroline, Erin, and William Schnell, and Emerson Shaw and Aiden Fulkerson; great grandchildren, Cassandra and Alyssa Schnell; siblings, Adelaide Smith and husband Ted, Harriet Sloan and husband John, and James Schnell and wife Harriet.
A service to celebrate the life of Dr. Schnell will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday March 3, 2017 in the chapel of Kornegay & Moseley with Dr. Mark Bredholt officiating. Burial will follow the service at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors. The family will have a time of fellowship immediately following at Seacoast Church, 631 Sparkleberry Lane, Columbia, SC 29223. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church.
