Colonel Currey passed away peacefully May 8, 2016 at The Palmettos on Parklane, his
youngest son Craig by his side. Poignantly, he was reunited with his wife of 56 years,
Maxine Robertson Currey, in the early morning of Mother’s Day. Born and raised in
Normantown, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Ira and Monnie Currey.
Graduated from Glenville State College with a Physical Education degree, Charles was
drafted during the Korean War. He served in the U.S. Army for 33 years and saw
combat in Vietnam as an advisor in the Delta with MACV. He was a career Air Defense
officer and was assigned to multiple postings including Washington DC, Kansas,
Oklahoma, Texas, France, Holland, California, Korea and Vietnam.
Colonel Currey enjoyed all-things sports! He was a loyal Redskins fan, a Little League
coach for his sons’ teams, the biggest fan at RNE football and Spring Valley lacrosse
games, cheering for his grandsons’ rival high schools. He was an avid gardener, always
sowing his West Virginia farming heritage into whatever soil the Army planted him.
Charles attended three Baptist churches in Northern Virginia upon retirement. When he
relocated to Columbia, South Carolina, he became a member of Northeast Presbyterian
Church. He attended the Good News Sunday Class and was always grateful for his
friends and their loving support. He recently resided at NHC and The Palmettos on
Parklane where he was known as “the Colonel,” always thankful for their care.
Colonel Currey is survived by two siblings, Burl Currey and Norma Yeardley; his three
adult sons and their wives: Charles “Chuck” C. Currey and his wife, Pippi; Jon Chris
Currey and his wife Susan; COL (Ret.) Craig J. Currey and his wife, Maria; seven
grandchildren, Molly Farmer, Madeline Currey; Steven and Kristen Currey; Laura
(Edward) Thompson, David and Paul Currey; and three great-grandchildren, Jane,
Claire and Stephen Thompson.
